The People

Philip Barrett and Sabina Holle first had the idea of starting Hanna Stud with the purchase of our first PRE stallion, Farino.

Philip's background is in agriculture, having been born and raised in rural NZ, where he grew up with horses.
Philip holds a Bachelors Degree in Art and a Masters Degree in Resource Management, both from Massey University. He is an integral part of the management of our stud, being involved in the training of youngstock, breeding of mares and overall decisions of our breeding programme.

Sabina, immigrated from her native Germany in the late 1980s to pursue a PhD at Massey University. She also holds a Veterinary Degree from Germany and has worked in Veterinary Research and Teaching for many years, before dedicating herself full-time to the day-to-day management and running of the farm.
In addition, Sabina trains and exercises all ridden stallions.

In early 2010, Sabina was recognised as an accredited PRE breed judge by the Foundation for the Purebred Spanish Horse and PRE Mundial, by Col. Javier Velazquez.
She is also an authorized veterinarian by ANCCE to inscribe PRE foals into the Spanish Studbook.

The Stud

Since April 2008 Hanna Stud is located in the stunningly beautiful South Island of New Zealand, close to Rangiora, in North Canterbury. Our farm comprises a little over 50 ha of mainly flat fertile free draining soils.

Hanna Stud was first established in 1994, in Palmerston North, Manawatu, originally breeding mainly partbred Spanish horses. Shortly after this, we have specialized in Pure Spanish Horses (Caballos de Pura Raza Espanola – PRE), having lived in the Waikato (Cambridge) and Franklin Districts (Waiuku) between 1996 and 2008 before making our final move to the South Island.

Paddocks & Stables

The new farm has been developed to provide a safe environment for horses, including a majority of post and rail horse fencing, with separate grazing areas for our stallions and young colts, our broodmares and, foals, separate stable complex for stallions and mares.
The stallion paddocks are double fenced at between 1.60 to 1.8ms to allow for extra safety without compromising the need for free exercise, social interaction and ompanionship amongst stallions and colts. The majority of paddocks are of generous size to allow for year round free exercise and sufficient pasture cover.
The mare paddocks are of generous size, allowing for plenty of space for groups of mares with or without foals.

Training Facilities

Adult stallions are exercised regularly throughout the year, being taken on trail rides as well as trained in dressage.
Training facilities include

  • a 20x40 all weather arena
  • a 20m round yard
  • a 20x40 covered dressage arena

Pasture

With our horses living on pasture throughout the year, all our paddocks are regularly cleaned from manure and groomed as part of an ongoing pasture management and parasite control scheme. In addition, regular soil testing, fertiliser application, weed management and pH adjustment of soil ensures year-round growth of quality pasture for optimum development of young, growing horses. Horses are supplemented on a regular basis with premixed grain/Lucerne feeds including mineral, vitamin and trace element supplements.
Quality meadow hay and baylage is harvested on the farm from paddocks which are not grazed by horses.

At Hanna PRE Stud we take pride in high quality maintenance and presentation of our horses and their environment. Stud inspection is welcome and can be arranged by appointment.
